Recently, a study conducted at the UNICAMP (University of Campinas), São Paulo, Brazil, showed that dynamic physical exercise such as strength and weight training can lower the stored liver fat and advance blood sugar control in obese and diabetic people in a short period, even before noteworthy weight loss occurs. During the experiments with mice, scientists at UNICAMP’s LaBMEx (Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Exercise) discovered that 2 Weeks of such exercise was adequate to change gene expression in ways that burned more amassed lipids in liver tissue and added to the treatment of NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In tissue, the cellular insulin signaling advanced and hepatic fusion of glucose dropped. The research was backed by FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation).
The study was published in the Journal of Endocrinology. Leandro Pereira de Moura—Professor at UNICAMP’s School of Applied Sciences—said, “Everyone is aware that physical exercise helps in controlling the disease. Our study focuses on why and how this is so, on the systems involved. If we can find out a key protein whose levels fall or rise with training, we will take a step toward the development of drugs that imitate some of the gains of physical exercise.” Moura stated that in the liver the excess fat leads to the local inflammation, which makes liver cells less susceptible to the action of insulin. This state can lead to cirrhosis and ultimately to liver failure.
On a similar note, earlier a study showed that strength training might reduce the peril of diabetes in obesity. The strength training in a short span can decrease fat storage in the liver and develop blood glucose control in obese mice. The study reported that strength training in a short time period would be enough to alter body fat composition in humans. These results indicate that strength training might be an effective and fast strategy for reducing the menace of diabetes and fatty liver disease in obese people.
