Instagram has begun rolling out new features, which allows its users to start flagging instances of misinformation, keeping the app safe from fake news. The photo & video sharing platform, owned by Facebook, stated that this tool would start being available to users by September. Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram stated that he was proud of this feature, which allowed people to let Instagram’s support know, in case they saw posts on the platform that they felt were fake news. He tweeted that more measures would be launched to fight misinformation campaigns on social media sites that would eliminate this malady.
Like many social media networking sites, Instagram has also been used for spreading misinformation and fake news, which are gobbled up by gullible users. Back in May, Instagram had begun actively blocking hashtags, which were being used for promoting misinformation regarding vaccine safety and spreading unnecessary fear. Instagram stated that its users would now be capable of reporting misinformation or fake news instances by simply clicking a button with 3 dots, located at the corner of a post, in its upper right side. They could then hit buttons which would allow them to designate the post as inappropriate. They could then file this post under false information.
Fact-checkers will review all flagged posts, checking for the accuracy of the content. Instagram has stated that false information wouldn’t be removed but problematic posts wouldn’t appear on Instagram’s explore, hashtag or search pages. This new tool makes good on a measure taken by Instagram for using image detection strategies to discover content, which had already by debunked by Facebook’s fact-checking team. Instagram also announced in its statement that this feedback would be used by them for training artificial intelligence tech as well that would enable them to find and reduce misinformation content available on Instagram automatically.
