Rendering to a new report, antibiotics might increase the risk of colon cancer, even though the drugs can assist to kill harmful bacteria. Recently, a study was conducted by researchers from the University of John Hopkins, which was printed in the journal Gut to determine the link among colon cancer and the use of oral antibiotic. In order to do that, records of nearly thirty-thousand people were examined by them from the UK, ageing between 40 and 90, who were either developed with rectal or colon cancer.
People in the similar age bracket was also assessed by them who did not have any of the diseases. The adults were followed by them for nearly 8 long years. Information regarding the use of antibiotics, focusing only on tablets and pills, and split the antibiotics into categories based on classes of the drugs, such as penicillin’s and tetracyclines was gathered by the team. It was found by the authors, after analyzing the results that, 70 percent of patients having rectal and colon cancers were prescribed antibiotics, as compared to just 68 percent of those who did not possessed cancer.
The association between the use of antibiotic and colon cancer was particularly evident among patients who would taken antibiotics more than ten years before they have been diagnosed with cancer, as per the findings. The risk varied based on the class and the type of prescribed antibiotic, said the scientists. While tetracyclines were linked reduced risk of rectum cancer, penicillin’s were linked with an increased risk of colon cancer. The number of times antibiotics used by the patients also played a role. Those who consumed the drug for just sixteen days had a heightened risk of cancer, and those who consumed them for nearly sixty days had a lower risk of rectal cancer.
